Named to All-America Team as a three-year starter at Purdue University (1972).
Named to NFL All-Rookie Team (1973).
Voted Defensive Player of the Year by the Brookland Club (1978).
Selected to the United Press International second-team All-NFC Squad (1979).
Received Timmie Award from The Touchdown Club of Washington as the team's Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year (1979).

1980's
Named the Outstanding Redskin by the Monday Morning Touchdown Club (1980).
Voted Defensive Player of the Year by the Brookland Club (1981).
Received Timmie Award from The Touchdown Club of Washington as the team's Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year (1982).
Voted to Associated Press, Pro-Football Weekly, United Press International, and the Sporting News All-Pro Teams (1983).
Named Defensive Lineman of the Year by the NFL Alumni Association (1983).
Selected NFC Defensive Player of the Year by the Kansas City 101 Club (1983).
Received Timmie Award from The Touchdown Club of Washington as the team's Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year (1983).
Chosen Second-Team All-NFL by the Associated Press (1984).
Received the George Allen Leadership and Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions on and off the field from The Touchdown Club of Washington (1988).
Voted to the NFL Team of the Eighties by the Hall of Fame Panel (1988).
Named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week and Washington's Defensive Player of the Game on multiple occasions.

1990's
Recognized for Meritorious Service to Sports by the St. Louis Baseball Writers Association of America (1990).
Elected to the Belleville News Democrat Sports Hall of Fame (1990).

2000's
Inducted into to the Purdue University Hall of Fame (2005).
Inducted into the East-West Shrine Game Hall of Fame (2008).
Received Timmie award for George Allen Leadership and Achievement Award; his four Timmie Awards still stand as the most ever given to any one person.
Voted a member of the 40th and 70th Greatest Redskins Teams of All Time.
Inducted into the Washington Redskins Ring of Stars at Fed Ex Field.
